As the latest addition to the Mediated Media writing staff I wanna thank James for allowing me to collaborate with him on this.  I’ve always been technologically unsavvy so having something like this site to move with is a small blessing.

For those of you wondering 21/M/Ann Arbor, MI. For everyone else, my name is Bryan D. Davila, I’m a senior at the University of Michigan but am originally from Los Angeles, CA (Alhambra to be specific). I’ve been a music enthusiast since I can remember; thanks to my sister, some early favorites of mine include Weezer “Blue”, RATM’s “Battle of Los Angeles”, and Beck “Odelay” to name a few. However, my biggest life regret to date is making Limp Bizkit “Significant Other” the first album I ever purchased.

I’m a DJ on campus playing parties, small clubs, and on a radio show on 88.3 WCBN FM Ann Arbor (www.wcbn.org). I enjoy dance music when it comes to mixing so if you happen to catch my show (Sunday mornings 3-6am EST) you’ll notice that I often go from electro to house to disco to minimal and back. For a more laidback feel, check me out on WCBN Sunday nights from 11pm-1am where I host while my friend DJ Teddy Ruck-spin plays hip-hop to ease you into the week.

I’m excited to contribute to Mediated Media; hopefully within the next few weeks you will get to know me a little better through my posts and the mixes I hope to put together for the site. For now I’ll leave you all with a small gift:

Yesterday, the production team Special Problems released a video that they did for Flying Lotus’ track off of Cosmogramma title “Mmmhmm”. Featuring Thundercat, “Mmmhmm” is great in itself, but the video takes soothing vocals and an atmospheric melody to another level. Moving between distant astral planes and NES game worlds, Special Problems did well in producing this video for Fly Lo. I trust you won’t be disappointed.

Bryan

Compliments of newly added Mediated Media member/author Bryan Davila (a.k.a. Thelonius Funk a.k.a. DJ Funk It).  I’ve got some sick new new from English guitarist, producer, and co-founder of Allido Records.  Ronson has produced some of the hottest albums and artists of the past decade including: Sean Paul - Dutty Rock, Teriyaki BoyzBeef or Chicken, Ol’ Dirty BastardOsirus, Amy Winehouse Back to Black, Wale 100 Miles & Running, WaleThe Mixtape About Nothing. It comes as know surprise to see that for his new single “Bang Bang Bang” he enlisted the talents of none other than Q Tip. One thing is for sure, Ronson knows how to put out hits.

Enjoy the video and check out his Myspace for more tracks.

Get the kiddy sprinklers and Fla-Vor-Ice out, because summer is bout to go inferno in here.  If you haven’t already, get at the new Major Lazer Summer Mix off the most recent edition of Diplo’s brainchild of a record label Mad Decent.  This mix starts of with one of my favorite Major Lazer jams ripe for summer “Keep it Going Louder” featuring Nina Sky and Ricky Blaze and quickly moves to some new remixes of the Top 40’s best on the radio right now like Jay-Z’s “On to The Next One” and that new Ciara joint.  This mix has got a little more hip-hop and pop and a little less Jamaican Dancehall and dub which might upset some of you die-hards although I think it’s doing just fine….

Take a listen and download here (right-click and “save as”) or at Mad Decent.

Enjoy.

Yea, he’s back. GUCCI. BURRR. He’s actually icey enough that I’m ok with him spittin’ out BURR every 30 secs. on his tracks, it’s better than the DMX ‘dawg’ bark isn’t it? On an unrelated note, it’s dissapointing Gucci can’t tweet in jail, even though Lil Wayne somehow seems to be doing it through his @liltunechi by passing notes to his brother or something. Who knows. Anyways, pretty excited to see Gucci Mane dropping his new album “The Burrprint HD2″ on my birthday next week, April 13th.  A lot of the tracks on the album have already been assaulting the air waves pretty hard and I’ve been utterly enjoying it: “Lemonade”, “Spotlight” w/ Usher, and “Wasted” among others.

BURNS, BURNS, BURNS.  So many fond memories (or lackthereof) of this man as he played a full two-hour set getting me ready for Deadmau5′ apperance at The Fillmore in Detroit last  January.  This dude is a madman, and is far and away more talented than he a.)lets on and b.) gets credit for.  Now, no offense to BURNS but Deadmau5 did rock the house a little harder than he did, but then again he was opening for him; can’t steal someone’s thunder when it’s not your tour…

But now it’s BURNS time to shine, and boy is he lighting up my ears like a 70’s Disco light show.  BURNS has recently released a new EP “So Many Nights” reminiscent of his tour last year of Deadmau5 (yea, I saw him front row…) and is anything but disappointing. keep reading and listen…

There’s a lot of attention to capital letters there, I know. ANYways, you may remember hearing this Duck Sauce jam ANYway featured on the site a month or two ago when I originally posted the How To Make It In America mixtape mixed by DJ Green Lantern and in part by the shows co-star and token NY celebrity, Scott “Kid” Mescudi (Kid Cudi, if you didn’t get the “Kid”…).  Duck Sauce, one part DJ A-trak and one part Armand Van Helden, held together by the pseudonym “Duck Sauce” (much like their cohorts Major Lazer–Diplo and Switch)  have been, in my opinion, one of the most underrated electronic duos and I’m utterly surprised they haven’t made the rounds around the blogosphere more considering their huge talent level.

Today, however, I bring you fellow under-rated DJ duo LAZRtag (who’s made it on this site with their EP “Never Gonna Stop” before, and their remix of the Duck Sauce groove.  The original has got a LOT of funky disco fever as intended by A-trak and Van Helden to remix their favorite vintage disco sounds and tunes.  LAZRtag, however, brings their unique power-chord electronic sound while perfectly preserving the vintage disco styling and sound; it makes for an interesting blend of modern fist-pump and boogie instinct.

Jamaica-I Think I Like U 2

This new group Jamaica has been making circles around the web for a few days now I felt I had no choice but to share this awesome song with everyone.  Initially I was a little confused and intrigued, with a name like ‘Jamaica’ I think that’s only natural.  Jamaica is a two-person group formerly known as PONEY PONEY. Now a duo, Antoine Hilaire and Flo Lyonnet doing their own thing as they work on a soon to be released album.

I was also shocked to hear they’re signed to Ed Banger Records as well. Further adding to their electronic rep. (even though their music isn’t electronic?) is the fact that Xavier de Rosnay of Justice produced their first single “I Think I like U 2″ along with Peter J. Franco.  Add another layer of hipster appeal when you factor in their recent T-Shirts and apparel done in conjunction with French fashion blog/label Cool Cats over at their “Le Coolcat Blog” which frequently deals with fellow Ed Banger artists like DJ Medhi among some Kistune artists like Autokratz.  You put all the pieces together and these kids have the potential to be more hipster than $100 flannel shirts and Phoenix pre- 2008; stopping power.

This song is soooo fresh, and the video even fresher. Check it out along with their Myspace.

The Glitch Mob-Drive It Like You Stole It

LA’s DJ brain collective The Glitch Mob has been busy in the lab for their new album Drink The Sea set to release May 25th.  The Glitch Mob has long been one of my favorite DJ sets and one of the most underappreciated and underrated electronic music pioneers.  The Glitch Mob is edITBoreta, and Ooah as they come together with each’s own specialty, much like those annoying kids from Captain Planet, to form one super DJ group (sort of like Birdy Nam Nam also…).  Traditionally their tracks come off up-tempo, kind of dark and edgy, but still 100% in the mix and ready to party.  I saw these three at Lollapalooza this summer in a ridiculous DJ set at the “Rave In The Round” stage, and let me tell you these kids killed it–they had me sweatin’ through my shorts and girls taking their shirts off, hype shit. Their newest single “Drive It Like You Stole It” shows that potential through a remix or two, but the original is much more epic than any 3 minute in-the-ear-out-the-ear dance groove and fist-pump tune.

Mos Def-24 Hour Karate School

A few weeks ago I broke the news that legendary hip-hop producer Ski Beatz was to release a mixtape/album reading as a ‘who’s who’ of hip-hop. The sad news was, well, it wasn’t going to drop on March 30th. But that’s not going to stop me from getting my hands on a full length track (no ’snippets’ here). Thus, I bring you Mos Def’s joint from the mixtape aptly titled “24 Hour Karate School”. Lovely hip-hop song. Check it out now.

David Guetta-World Goes Round Feat. Bruno Mars.

David Guetta may not be the most modest guy in the word, but indeed he’s been making some bangers the past year or so.  As the one responsible for that Akon song “Sexy Bitch” I both love and hate him, but with his latest pursuit “World Goes Round” featuring Bruno Mars (think that really good B.o.B. song “Nothing on You”) I’m starting lean more towards loving him even if his moniker is “Fuck Me I’m Famous”… If he continues to make great upbeat house music with chilling vocals like Bruno Mars’ over the tracks I’ll definitely continue to listen; 2010 just may be the year of Bruno Mars…
