Ok, so this is going to seem a little, perhaps even a LOT, weird but this Nick Jr. show Yo Gabba Gabba! is legitttt. Yo Gabba Gabba! originally aired in 2007 and is now in it’s 3rd season and the show is aimed to be a musically themed educational show.  Man, I wish I had show like this when I was growing up over Sesame Stree any day with musicians like Of Montreal and MGMT doing segments. Oh yea, and did I mention Biz Markie practically hosts the show and does “Biz’ Beat of the Day”?

Phantogram-When I’m Small

It’s rare that I’ll say this, if ever again considering we’re only two months into a new year: Phantogram’s debut album Eyelid Movies is/will be the best album of 2010. Period. It’s been years since I’ve heard an album as well put together as Eyelid Movies from everything like concept (what is a phantogram you ask?) to production to just damn pleasurable ear candy.

Holy Ghost-Hold On

Disco  DJ Duo (phew!) Holy Ghost! is at again with this funky latest re-incarnation of Friendly Fires song “On Board”. It’s funny, I’ve never been so excited about a DJ group that has only three original tracks to their name (well 2 since one is a cover..), yet these guys consistently tear up clubs, bars, and shit, even house parties on a daily basis across the pond.

Gorillaz-Stylo

Yea, thats right, more Gorillaz.  This one is a heretofore unreleased track off of their upcoming albumg Plastic Beach and I think will be much more pleasing to Gorillaz fans of yesteryears as it brings a much more playful and eclectic sound utilizing kickdrums, heavy basslines, their classic deep-voiced flow, and some cool electronic embellishments.  The track features old school heavy hitters De La Soul and Welsh musician Gruff Rhys of Super Fuzzy Animals and one part of Neon Indian (yea, he’s got a lil’ Injun in him…).

Weird Tapes-The Walking Dead

Memory Cassette, Memory Tapes, Hail Social, Weird Tapes; I have a hard time keeping track of chillwave pioneer Dayve Hawk’s pseudonyms and musical pursuits.  To be honest, I don’t see how ‘Weird’ Tapes is that much ‘weirder’ than Memory Tapes, with the exception of an excessive amount of Vocoder usage making him sound like an incoherently stoned robot who keeps trying to repeat himself at a party when everyone ignores him (that’s plausible, isn’t it?). Well ok, I guess that does make this a lot weirder than chillwave-triphop-acid delight musical venture Memory Tapes whose chilled out melodies and trippy motifs have the ability to slowly melt your brain without you knowing it.

This article was written in response to a recent lecture give by Alec Soth at the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA) on January 30th. Make sure to check out Alec’s work in full at his website http://www.alecsoth.com/.

“A Paralyzed Cylcops in The Democratic Jungle”; this was Alec Soth’s self-introduction to photography.  A challenging and questioning expression which, when unpacked of all it’s meaning in a seemingly vacuous wrapper, is quite profound.  A fitting phrase, for this is exactly what Alec Soth’s documentary photography invokes; on the outside a dead-pan straight photography giving the viewer nothing but the reality at hand in the photograph, yet on the inside a multiplicity of layers of meaning in dialogue with a hundreds of years old tradition of defining what is “photography”.  Soth’s photography is so ‘straight’ in style and so unassuming yet so much is to be found beneath the surface that it at once becomes an undeniably great case study on the limits of photography of which photography both transcends and is hemmed in by.

New track from M.A.N.D.Y. and Matthew Dear a.k.a known as supergroup M.A.N.D.E.A.R. (sort of a joke). Pretty chilled out groove feeling to this jam, I’m enjoying it a lot. MANDY is Germany’s two hottest House DJ’s Patrick Bodmer and Phillip Jung. Get M.A.N.D.Y’s full biography here

Enjoy the song already.

Miike Snow-Animal (Punks Jump Up Remix)

2009’s most remixed artist has already become 2010’s most remixed artist.  People can’t stop remixing Snow’s wonderful songs like Animal and Burial but today I bring you a heretofore unconsidered song for remixing, Silvia. It’s strange it played out that way too because Silvia always struck me as having the most remix potential, and is no doubt my favorite song on the debut album.

Michigan native Mike Posner has got his swag up on this latest single cover of Jeremiah’s “Birthday Sex” entitled “First Date Sex”.  The idea is catchy if nothing else, but some of the lyrics are absurd.  Seems like some of his recent success may have gone to his head a bit with lyrics like “yea, I got a few songs out, I shouldn’t have to wait that long now. I met Jay-Z, yea I’ll tell you about it if you have first date sex.” Eh, that ain’t gonna stop me from lovin’ the kid though; shit, he’s a Southfield native, I can’t deny any talent that good that comes out of Michigan.  My only real gripe with Posner is the glaring lack of original tracks. He started off strong with the first mixtape A Matter of Time and the summer smash hit “Drug Dealer Girl” and “Cooler Than Me”.  Here’s to the album?

Mike Posner-First Date Sex

I’ve been featuring Johnny Polygon as he makes the rounds on the blogosphere and music community a lot the past week or two.  First his mixtape Rebel Without Applause then his cameo on the How To Make It In America mixtape, and now his Riot Song gets a video.  Indeed, Polygon’s been a busy boy.  The video def. lives up to Polygon’s ego, as he’s known to be one lacking in the modesty department when it comes to his flow, your girl, and pretty much everything else he can one-up you on.

Anyways, take a look at the video
